minecraft and chess

Returning this fall are our popular Minecraft Madness! course and our Chess Competition Team.

Minecraft Madness!

Families now have a choice of registering for our regular monthly course or our NEW Minecraft Madness! Club.

Minecraft is a widely popular 3D video game that lets users explore, construct, create, and interact inside an open and changeable virtual world. Because of its educational potential, Minecraft has evolved into an excellent (and engaging) way to expose students to STEM-related subjects, including especially computer science and technology.

Students will need their own Minecraft Java account and a computer (Mac or PC). This version is a desktop (or laptop) version and NOT for other devices, such as the phone or tablet. Parents can purchase a lifetime account for $27 from Mojang.  In addition, we will connect using the Zoom app which enables the children to communicate virtually while they are in class and for us to monitor the children and help them with questions and/or problems.

Minecraft Madness! Club, $65 per month
Zoom Meeting Dates, Friday, 4:30-5:30 (however, server remains open outside of class time)
September: 9/11, 9/18, 9/25, 10/2
October: 10/9, 10/26, 10/23, 10/30
November: 11/6, 11/13, 11/20, (no class 11/27), 12/4

(Younger children must be comfortable working with computer and mouse)

Students in our Minecraft Madness! Club will be able to connect with kids in both our regular monthly course as well as club members via Zoom once per week on Fridays. In addition, the server remains open to club members beyond our scheduled Zoom class times. We know many of our kids want to continue finishing their Minecraft projects and explorations beyond the designated class times and Club membership provides the extra time. Each month of the Club begins on a Friday.

Prior to the class, you will receive an email with the information needed to join our multiplayer server and our Zoom meetings.

Similar to our monthly courses, new Minecraft worlds will be uploaded every month.

(If you have a child who will be entering 1st grade in the fall and are interested in having him/her participate, please contact us; exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis).

Chess is a wonderful pursuit, as this timeless game provides a range of benefits. Chess helps develop critical thinking skills; improve academic performance; and build sportsmanship, self-confidence, and discipline. Nicely, chess is very appealing to many kids, as it’s interesting, challenging, and a lot of fun to play.

The team will meet each week for 1 hour for 10 weeks. We will meet via Zoom and incorporate chess puzzles, lessons, and play sessions against each other using an online chess application. (This application can be accessed by multiple types of devices, thus, parents can register more than one child without requiring multiple computers). Members will also receive a full membership to the online chess program during this cycle. All levels are welcome.
